In our latest episode of OCMC Interviews, we had the pleasure of interviewing Steve and Theophani Sarigianis – two more of our pre-field missionaries! They’ve had a remarkable journey together, both through seminary and through their current preparations for missionary work, as they prepare to serve in Albania.

Steve grew up in Connecticut and was involved in the Church from a young age. He felt a desire to serve Christ and His Church. He attended the University of Connecticut and earned a BA in Psychology in 2010, but wasn’t sure where to go from there to best serve Christ. Steve therefore took a year off for reflection and spiritual growth, and ultimately felt compelled to study theology at Holy Cross. He entered in 2011 and, under the guidance of Fr. Luke Veronis, came to be very involved in missions. Steve served on six short-term mission teams while attending Holy Cross, and was president of the Missions Committee for three years. Throughout these experiences, Steve discerned a calling to long-term missionary service.

Theophani, likewise, grew up very involved in the Church. Her family’s deep faith inspired her to attend Hellenic College, where she likewise came to be involved in Orthodox missions. She joined Steve in the Missions Committee and explored her own vocation by participating in several short-term mission teams. During their interview, Steve and Theophani both reflected that these mission teams really helped them broaden their perspectives and realize their vocations.

As Steve and Theophani shared their journey in their interview, a consistent theme developed: anytime they felt completely confident that they knew where God was taking them, things would quickly shift into a different direction, and only much further down the road would they realize that it was the perfect course of events. God was teaching them to be flexible and faithful - essential traits for a couple preparing to live and serve in the mission field.

Their beautiful journey led them on a winding road through which they found each other, and, soon after, their calling to serve in Albania. To hear more about their journey, the lessons they learned, and the recommendations they have to everyone else interested in missions, click below to watch their interview! And stay tuned for future live missionary interviews as well.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
