We’ve been looking into missions in Mongolia through the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) for some time now. We visited the Center this past February and again this past June to participate in interviews, training, and orientation. A friend from our church, Kurt, has been in Mongolia with Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, in the capitol, for nearly 4 months now. Father Job joined him in September, and Faith Young is hoping to join them in the next few months.
Why are all these people going to Mongolia? Mongolia is a considerably open country right now religiously speaking. Nearly 40% of its people have no official religious affiliation. An additional 50% are Buddhist. Less than 2% are Christian, but many people are interested in the cultures of Russia, with whom the country has its closest ties, and the West. The one Orthodox church in the capitol, Ulaan-Baatar, was established by the Russian Orthodox Church. The priest there is very evangelically-minded and has sought assistance from OCMC to establish a missionary presence to give more Mongolians a chance to hear and respond to the message that Christ, by His death and resurrection, has destroyed death and given us life and light in Him. So, that’s why all these people are going to Mongolia. The harvest is truly plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Our goal is to join the missionary team in Mongolia full time next winter. Please pray for us. We are so busy with existing commitments, but we realize that this is a priority for us as well. We hope to participate on a short-term trip this coming September to get a better idea of how we’ll integrate into the team and come alongside the Church. We’re also doing some reading and strategic planning on missions and cultural integration through a correspondence course called Missions 101.
An important aspect of these next months will be building a base of financial and prayer supporters who will enable us to to travel to Mongolia, set up a living space, conduct our day-to-day lives with a sense of security, and begin learning the language and participating in ministries.
Please send us an email 1) if you’d like to receive updates from us; and 2) if you’d like to support our ministry financially. As members of the Body of Christ, we humbly seek to be His, and an extension of your outreach in Mongolia.
