OCMC News - Continued Progress in Turkana

OCMC News - Continued Progress in Turkana
School in Nakabosan

Since the first visit to the Turkana region to help construct St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Lodwar, which will be consecrated while teams are there this summer, OCMC has been asked to help build schools and wells elsewhere in the region. These projects are now well underway.

Loupwala is the oldest of three Orthodox Christian communities by the Kerio River. It is very isolated due to lack of roads, so completing work there is complex. The first project OCMC did in this area was to dig a borehole in 2011. Now in Loupwala, blocks for construction of a permanent building for St. Peter Orthodox Church are currently being made. Two OCMC Mission Teams will be going to the region this summer to assist with construction of the church.

Another project that OCMC took on in the region is the building of a small school in the remote village of Nakabosan. That project has now been completed. Previously, children in the area were meeting for instruction under a large tree, but many children weren’t attending school because of the heat.

In addition to completing the small village school, construction is underway on a larger academy based in Lodwar thanks to a donation by Fr. Anthony Tomaras in memory of his wife Presbytera Sophronia. The academy will include 6 classrooms of 30 students each, an office, kitchen, restrooms, storage, and area for religious services. The project recently got underway with the construction of fencing on the property.

Finally, progress is also being made on providing a well/borehole in Lokichar, a town located along the highway 90 km south of Lodwar. The Lokichar River crosses the highway and provides groundwater that can be accessed using shallow wells. The hydrological survey for the borehole is done, making way for progress on digging the well.

At OCMC, we are excited about the progress being made and are looking forward to continued missions development in the Turkana area. To support these mission efforts, you can donate online at http://ocmc.org/donate/index.aspx. In addition, your prayers are always needed and appreciated!

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
