OCMC News - From Alaska to Guatemala: Fr. Juvenal's Journey to the Mission Field

OCMC News - From Alaska to Guatemala: Fr. Juvenal

On Sunday, January 22, 2017, Fr. David Rucker, OCMC long-term missionary in Alaska, presided over the commissioning service for Archimandrite Juvenal Repass, who will deploy January 28th to serve a two-year missionary term in Guatemala in the Mayan Orthodox Church.

Fr. Juvenal was born in Connecticut and was baptized into the Orthodox Church at the age of twenty-four. He graduated from Yale with a degree in biochemistry and received a Master of Divinity degree from Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. Fr. Juvenal was tonsured a monk at Saint Tikhon’s Monastery in 1988 and remained at the monastery for 22 years. During his time there, he worked in the seminary library, taught Greek, helped with producing the magazine “Alive in Christ,” and worked on liturgical translations.

In May 1992, Fr. Juvenal was ordained a priest and was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite in 2007. He was given the opportunity in 2008 to serve the Orthodox Church in Alaska and began teaching at St Herman’s Seminary in Kodiak, where he spent the next six years.

While serving in Alaska, Fr. Juvenal felt a desire to aid in serving the growing Orthodox Church overseas. This desire is what brought him to return to Alaska to receive the commissioning prayers that will send him to Guatemala. The place where the desire for missions was cultivated in his heart, Alaska, will be the place that propels him as an offering to further his service in the mission field in Guatemala.

Fr. Juvenal will be one of two priests serving dozens of parishes in Guatemala. He will be based in Aguacate, serving the Church and teaching at the school. He will miss the people in Alaska and is sorry to say goodbye to them; he certainly has mixed feelings about leaving, but he knows the needs are so great in the world and is ready to serve. Ultimately, Fr. Juvenal rejoices that God is calling him to Guatemala. He asks for your prayers that he may accomplish all God intends for him there.

The Orthodox Christian Mission Center hopes that you will join in prayerfully supporting Fr. Juvenal during his missionary service. No doubt his years of serving the Orthodox Church will be a blessing to the faithful he will minister to in Guatemala.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
