2020 Kenya Teaching Team

Traveling From: 8/8/2020 to 8/17/2020; Team Cost: $1290*

“I had a beautiful journey. I feel blessed to be a part of OCMC. I plan to apply for another mission trip.” – Sofia, ’19 Kenya Team member

KISUMU, KENYA – Orthodox women interested in sharing their faith are needed! Go to Kenya and participate in a retreat that will focus on the unique ministry that women have in the Orthodox Church.

The 2020 Kenya Women’s Team has been invited by the Church in Kenya to participate in an annual five-day retreat for women from the Diocese of Kisumu and Western Kenya. Women from diverse backgrounds and different tribes will participate in this event to deepen their understanding of Orthodoxy. The women’s groups of the Orthodox Church of Kenya are called Mothers Unions and have one common desire, to grow in Christ and in their ministry to their Church.

The first OCMC Mission Team volunteered in Kenya in 1987 to construct a Church; the second team built a Clinic. Since then, Teams have built and provided catechism, health care services, and encouragement in several communities throughout this growing Metropolitanate.

Orthodoxy arose in East Africa without the influence of foreign missionaries. The Church was founded by two charismatic African men searching for truth and ‘orthodoxia’ in the 1920’s. The Orthodox Church in Kenya was received into canonical Orthodoxy in 1946, and the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary was opened in the 1980’s to train indigenous priests from Africa. OCMC has supported the work of the Orthodox Church in Kenya for over 40 years and continues to provide support for theological and catechetical training and works with church leaders to address issues of self-sufficiency for the church. Presently, the Church in Kenya has three hierarchs, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Kenya, Bishop Neophytos of Nyeri and Mount Kenya and Bishop Marcos of Kisumu.

His Grace Bishop Marcos was born on the 17th of April 1972 in Johannesburg, South Africa of Cypriot Greek parents. He attended and received his degree at theological school of Aristotle University of Thessalonica where he received his degree. He was ordained deacon on 1st of January 2001 in Alexandria at the Holy Patriarchal Church of the Annunciation and in August of the same year to the priesthood. In 2002 he served as personal secretary to the Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros II; in 2007 he was appointed as parish priest to the Dormition parish and in 2009 to St Athanasius in Johannesburg. He was active in the formation of the youth group, Sunday school, fellowship and bible study groups and other activities including the benevolent society for the needy. On the 14th of February he was enthroned as the bishop of Kisumu at the Holy monastery of Panagia Tricherousa by the Archbishop of Nairobi Makarios.

Share the teachings of the Orthodox faith and be a part of this dynamic women’s ministry of the Church in Kenya. Participants should be well-grounded in the basic teachings of the Church and prepared to offer basic Orthodox catechism and their experience in women’s groups in the US.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
