2021 Guatemala Outreach Team

Traveling From: 5/4/2021 to 5/24/2021; Team Cost: $1100*

Are you a student at an Orthodox Seminary? Earn credit hours and study Orthodox Christian missiology under the supervision of Fr. Luke Veronis, director of the Missions Institute and adjunct professor of Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA.

This class consists of two parts; coursework offered through Holy Cross/Hellenic College and a mission practicum that will be held this year in Guatemala. This summer class combines an academic element, a missions experience, and a spiritual pilgrimage.

Course Description:

The Missiology of Archbishop Anastasios mission class and practicum is a 3 credit class that will study the life, missiology and writings of Archbishop Anastasios (Yannoulatos) of Albania, the foremost Orthodox missionary and missiologist in the world today. This class will examine how he has lived this missiology through his ministry in the Church of Albania. The course will look at the foundation and calling of missions, study the resurrection of the Church of Albania over the past 30 years, and examine how the church has succeeded in living out the missiology of the Archbishop. Typically this class has included a practicum to Albania where we have witnessed the resurrection of the Church and met with Archbishop Anastasios. This year, this course is being adjusted to replace the practicum to Albania with a practicum to Guatemala, where we will study the mission strategy and outreach among the Mayan Indians.

Course Requirements:

  • In-class time (pre-trip classes, classes while in Guatemala, and follow-up upon return to the States)
  • Mission practicum
  • Response papers on the required readings
  • Reflection while in the field
  • Final Paper

Guatemala and missionary outreach among the Mayan Indians is one of the newest fields of mission in the Orthodox Church. We will witness this mission, learn from the indigenous Christians as well as from the OCMC missionaries. Contact OCMC or the Mission Institute of Orthodox Christianity (http://www.hchc.edu/missions/ -- frlukeveronis@gmail.com) for registration information. Participation is limited to Orthodox seminarians and will include no more than 12 students.

Dates: May 4-24, 2021

Cost: $1,100.

Travel – Team members must fly on the same itinerary to and from the project destination. The Mission Institute will provide an itinerary and make flight arrangements (round-trip) to Boston-Guatemala (dates out of the USA will be May 15-24).

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
