2019 Kenya Outreach Team

Traveling From: 8/2/2019 to 8/15/2019; Team Cost: $1715*

PROJECT

There will be two components to the Veronis Family Mission: 1) conduct a Vacation Church School (VCS); and 2) assist with construction of two classrooms at the St. Paul’s God Jope Hills Academy and Orphanage.

This project, hosted by Fr. Anastasios “Elekhiah” Kihali and the Diocese of Kisumu and West Kenya is located at God Jope Market in Migori County. The Team will also visit other Orthodox communities, including the Makarios III Seminary in Nairobi.

TASKS

Youth seminar

You will be engaging and encouraging youth in their Christian walk. The theme for the VCS is “Together Let Us Build Our Society” and you will be able to offer a combination of teaching about the faith, English Language lessons, sports, crafts and Bible studies for approximately two hundred and fifty students. There may also be some evening activities. All of your experiences will assist you in this ministry, yet we encourage you to remember that raising up and encouraging indigenous leadership is part of a healthy Orthodox Mission consciousness.

Construction

You will provide simple labor to help finish two classrooms. “The team will do part of the actual plastering of the remaining classrooms and the outside of the building. Painting, windows, ceiling and fitting of electricity and furniture (desks and chairs), as well.” Basic construction skills are welcomed, but not required. The biggest need is often another set of hands. This component of the project is contingent on eight or more participants.

ACCOMODATIONS & TRAVEL

Hotel accommodations in Nairobi will include airport shuttle and access to safari operator. In Migori, Team members will be lodged at the Florence Hotel (F/B – breakfast, dinner included). Safari accommodation to be determined. Mosquito netting provided.

Local transportation will begin upon arrival at the airport in Nairobi and take Team members to Makarios III Seminary, and then on to Migori. Hired bus will be available for the duration. Upon conclusion, safari tour operator will provide additional transportation.

Dates: Aug 2 - 13, 2019

Cost: $1,715 (+ airfares and safari)

Travel Team Members are responsible for all air travel: round trip to Nairobi, Kenya on Aug 2, returning home on Aug 15. Airfares are not included in participant cost.

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
