2019 Kenya Teaching Team

Traveling From: 11/4/2019 to 11/13/2019; Team Cost: $900*

NYERI, KENYA – The 2019 Kenya Mission Team has been invited by Bishop Neofitos of Nyeri and Mount Kenya to share the love of Christ at an annual event in central Kenya for the clergy wives of the Diocese. This is the second year that OCMC is partnering with His Grace to offer this meaningful program that will offer lessons on the faith and include small group discussions on social and faith issues and crafts. A key concern is for the spiritual empowerment of the family with a special emphasis on the role of the clergy wife in the home and in the parish. The Team will also visit various ministries of the Diocese.

Orthodoxy arose in East Africa without the influence of foreign missionaries; founded by two charismatic African men searching for truth and ‘orthodoxia’ in the 1920’s. The Orthodox Church in Kenya was received into canonical Orthodoxy in 1946, and the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary was opened in the 1980’s to train indigenous priests from Africa. OCMC continues to provide support for theological and catechetical training, and works with church leaders to address issues of self-sufficiency for the church. Presently, the Church in Kenya has two hierarchs, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Kenya and Bishop Neophytos of Nyeri and Mount Kenya.

His Grace Neophytos, the ruling Bishop of Nyeri, was born in 1970 in the village of Kesengei, in the Nandi district of Kenya. He holds a degree from the “Archbishop Makarios III” Patriarchal Academy in Kenya. He was ordained deacon on September 13, 1998 and priest on the 27th by Metropolitan Seraphim of Kenya, (now of Zimbabwe and Angola). He served in parishes in Nairobi and at the Patriarchal Academy as Deputy Principal. On 27 February 2005, he was consecrated as Archimandrite by His Eminence Makarios of Kenya. In the same year he was awarded a post graduate title in Theological Studies from Holy Cross Orthodox Seminary in Boston. In 2007 he was tonsured a monk at the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration in Veroia. In November 2014 he was elected by the Holy Synod as Auxiliary Bishop.

Mission Team members should be exemplary role models for the women.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
