2015 Mexico Teaching Team

Traveling From: 8/8/2015 to 8/14/2015; Team Cost: $675*

NOTE: New Dates

San Esteban and Pisaflores -- The Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) and the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) Diocese of Mexico are sponsoring a Mission Team to, Mexico, August 8-14, 2015. With the blessing of His Eminence Alejo, Archbishop of Mexico, this teaching outreach to the villages of San Esteban and Pisaflores will foster the Orthodox Faith and preach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to the local Aztec people.

The Team members will lead discussions on the Orthodox Faith, teach children basic catechisms lessons and craft activities, and offer adult catechism. Liturgical services will be held daily. Team members will travel to Mexico on August 8, travel to Pisaflores and San Esteban (9 hours northwest of Mexico City), and depart August 14.

Both Pisaflores and San Esteban are villages of native Aztec Orthodox Christians. Both villages live subsistent. The homes are of simple concrete block construction with corrugated metal roofs and do not have running water or indoor bathroom facilities. Horses and burros are main forms of transportation. The people dress modestly maintaining local traditions.

The sophisticated Aztec Empire in central Mexico was destroyed by the Spanish and smallpox in the early 16th century. The break between the Mexican government and the Vatican ended with official relations being restored and many restrictions ending in 1992. Constitutional changes also granted fairer treatment for religious minorities, but persecution of non-Catholics persists in some areas.

The history of the Orthodox Church in Mexico is a colorful tapestry of Mexicans seeking the Orthodox faith, varied ethnic migrations and different jurisdictions being maturing in this diverse land. The last decades of the 1800’s brought a flux of Orthodox immigrants to Mexico and established communities in Mexico City. After independence from Spain, the power of the Catholic Church was limited and the "Mexican Apostolic National Church" was created. In 1970, a large group became part of the Orthodox Church in America. The elevation of Bishop Alejo of Mexico City took place in 2009. The OCA Diocese of Mexico currently contains nine churches and numerous missions with several thousand faithful.

This is a unique opportunity to share your Faith and be a part of a Christian witness in Mexico. Participants with experience in youth ministry and adult catechism are urged to apply. Participants must be fluent (or near fluent) in Spanish.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
