2019 Indonesia Teaching Team

Traveling From: 7/1/2019 to 7/13/2019; Team Cost: $1270*

MEDAN, INDONESIA – Have you ever considered how the Orthodox Church was established in Indonesia and why it is growing? The 2019 Indonesia Teaching Team has been invited by His Eminence Konstantinos Metropolitan of Singapore and South Asia to teach the basics of Orthodoxy in theory and ‘praxis’ – as a way of life. Team members will be teaching the Orthodox Faith, spirituality and evangelism at the St. Paul Theological School, St. Sophia School and St. Demetrios Church. The Team will offer will offer lessons on the faith, celebrate the liturgical life with Indonesian Orthodox faithful as well as have time for fellowship.

Indonesia is a country with over 230 million people and where only six religions are officially recognized: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism and Protestantism. Islam’s strength and influence in numbers and power allow it to exert itself on the religious, political and social scenes, taking preferential treatment and limiting the activities of other faiths. Indonesia has a growing and diverse economy. Economic improvement was significantly reduced by economic crises in the last decade; recovery and new growth are still hampered. Endemic corruption exists and the need for economic reform still remains.

OCMC continues to support the strategic mission potential of the Metropolis of Singapore and South Asia. This Team will provide support and assistance to the Church’s missionary initiatives which began thirty years ago in this nation where Christianity continues to be a minority faith.

Participants should have a sound understanding of the Orthodox Faith and the ability to teach. English language teachers have also been requested.

Dates: July 1 - 13, 2019

Cost: $1,270 (+airfare)

Travel Team Members must fly on the international travel itinerary OCMC will provide to and from the project destination. Team Members are responsible for all air travel: one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) on July 1st (by 4 pm for orientation) and an international segment from JAX to Medan on July 3, returning home on July 13. Airfares are not included in participant cost.

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
