2018 Kenya Youth Work Team

Traveling From: 11/28/2018 to 12/8/2018; Team Cost: $1365*

Nairobi – Be part of a Youth Mentorship initiative that is geared to help at risk youth with life skills in an Orthodox context and offer the tools that the Church has available to sustain the temptations of corrupting social influences.

The 2018 Kenya Mission Team has been invited by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Kenya to participate in a Teen & Youth Mentorship Program that will take place at the St. Clement of Alexandria School, located next to the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary. This mentorship program is open to youth from the greater Kawangware community and hopes to cultivate an atmosphere of self awareness and confidence; an appreciation for education; and equip youth with life skills beyond academics, and a positive attitude. There will be different activities for each “target” group (middle and high school).

St. Clement’s provides education to approximately 250 children from the surrounding villages of the Riruta-Satellite in the outskirts of Nairobi. Some children attending St. Clements come from deprived backgrounds. Some are orphans, refugees from neighboring countries or children of single parent families. In 2002, St Clement’s began with two classes, a Pre-School and Kindergarten. They have continued to meet the growing needs and have expanded, almost one grade level each year.

Orthodoxy arose in East Africa without the influence of foreign missionaries. The Church was founded by two charismatic African men searching for truth and ‘orthodoxia’ in the 1920’s. The Orthodox Church in Kenya was received into canonical Orthodoxy in 1946, and the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary was opened in the 1980’s to train indigenous priests from Africa. OCMC has supported the work of the Orthodox Church in Kenya for over 30 years and continues to provide support for theological and catechetical training and works with church leaders to address issues of self-sufficiency for the church. Presently, the Church in Kenya has three hierarchs, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Kenya, Bishop Neophytos of Nyeri and Mount Kenya, and Bishop Athanasios of Kisumu and Western Kenya.

Be a part of this mentorship program of the Church in Kenya and share the teachings of the Orthodox faith. Participants should be well-grounded in the basic teachings of the Church and prepared to offer basic Orthodox catechism and religious education. Social workers, peer counselors, career advisers and spiritual leaders needed.

Dates: November 28 – December 8, 2018

Cost: $1,365 (+ airfares)

Travel – Team Members must fly on the international travel itinerary OCMC will provide to and from the project destination. Team Members are responsible for all air travel: one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Wednesday, November 28 (by 4 pm for orientation) and an international segment from JAX to Nairobi on Friday, November 30, returning home on Saturday, December 8. Airfares are not included in participant cost.

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
