2018 Mexico Teaching Team

Traveling From: 8/11/2018 to 8/18/2018; Team Cost: $725*

Vera Cruz, Mexico – The 2018 Mexico Mission Team will continue to assist the outreach efforts of the Diocese of Mexico as she reaches out to native Aztec Orthodox Christians in the villages of Zapote Bravo, Jonatal and Zimatla. This Team has been invited to teach children basic religious education, crafts, and activities in a Vacation Bible School format and offer adult catechism in the afternoon. You will attend worship services with the local communities and encourage the faithful by your presence and through offering the teachings of the Orthodox Church.

These parishes are visited by an Orthodox priest only a few times a year and evangelical Protestants have proselytized many of the region’s Orthodox Christians. The town of Zapote Bravo is located in the Municipality of Ixhuatlán de Madero (in the State of Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave) with approximately 1,400 inhabitantsLos ciudadanos se dividen en 708 menores de edad y 672 adultos, de cuales 87 tienen más de 60 años.. Most of the adult population speaks an indigenous language and Spanish. Most have access to electricity. Surrounding Zapote Bravo are neighboring Orthodox communities the Team may visit.

The history of the Orthodox Church in Mexico is a colorful tapestry of Mexicans seeking the Orthodox faith. After independence from Spain, the power of the Catholic Church was limited, and a "Mexican Apostolic National Church" was created. A large percentage of this movement was Aztec. In 1970, a portion of this group was received into the Orthodox Church in America. The Holy Synod of Bishops elected Bishop Alejo as ruling Bishop of Mexico City and the Exarchate of Mexico in 2008, and His Grace was enthroned in Mexico City in 2009. The Diocese of Mexico currently contains twelve churches, fourteen clergy, numerous missions and several thousand faithful.

The Team is co-sponsored by the Orthodox Church in America and the OCMC with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Alejo of the Diocese of Mexico. This Team will be led by Fr. Antonio Perdomo.

Participants must be fluent (or near fluent) in Spanish.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
