2018 Indonesia Teaching Team

Traveling From: 6/26/2018 to 7/9/2018; Team Cost: $1285*

Bali – Assist the Orthodox Church in Indonesia with its ongoing mission to this island by being part of a family-focused ministry in Singaraja, Bali. This Team has been asked to teach about the Orthodox understanding of marriage, family life, basic catechism and have time for fellowship with the young families who are new to the faith. English lessons have also been requested.

This 2018 Indonesia Teaching Team has been invited by His Eminence Metropolitan Constantine of Singapore and South Asia to teach the basics of Orthodoxy in theory and praxis. Theological education is a vital need in this young church as is the witness of the Christian family. The St. Thomas House in Singaraja, Bali, has been a recipient of OCMC AGAPE Grants since 2005. Under the loving care of Fr. Stephanos Boik Nino and his Presbytera, the home has offered children a place to live and scholarships as an outreach of the Orthodox Church of Indonesia. Some of the first graduates are now working and many have embraced Orthodoxy.

Indonesia is a country with over 230 million people, where only six religions are officially recognized: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism and Protestantism. Bali is a predominantly Hindu region of Indonesia and Christianity accounts for less than 2% of the population. Islam’s strength and influence in numbers and power allow it to exert itself on the religious, political and social scenes, taking preferential treatment and limiting the activities of other faiths. Indonesia has a growing and diverse economy. Economic improvement was significantly reduced by economic crises in the last decade; recovery and new growth are still hampered. Endemic corruption exists and the need for economic reform still remains.

OCMC continues to support the strategic mission potential of the Metropolis of Singapore and South Asia and the Orthodox Church in Indonesia. This Team will provide support and assistance to the Church’s missionary initiatives which began thirty years ago in this nation where Christianity continues to be a minority faith.

Participants should have a sound understanding of the Orthodox Faith and the ability to teach. English language teachers have also been requested. Families are welcome.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
