2018 Ghana Youth Work Team

Traveling From: 8/6/2018 to 8/21/2018; Team Cost: $1460*

Larteh – The second Annual Orthodox Youth Camp will minister to 200-300 Orthodox youth ages 12-18 from different regions of Ghana. Campers will learn more about their Orthodox Christian Faith through bible studies, fun activities, and lively discussions. Team members will work closely with local clergy and lay leaders before, during, and after the camp to help strengthen the Orthodox identity of the campers and the Orthodox faithful in Ghana. This is a great opportunity to use your youth ministry talents to spiritually support the witness of 22 growing Orthodox parishes being challenged by non-Orthodox and non-Christian religious groups.

The Orthodox Church is one of the few faiths not associated with colonialism in Ghana. In 1982, the Church in Ghana was canonically received by the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. The Cathedral was constructed in 1989 with the aid of an OCMC Mission Team. The Holy Archdiocese of Ghana was established in 1997 and His Eminence Narcissos was elected Metropolitan of Accra in 2016. His Eminence Narcissos, (born Samer Gammoh), was born in Amman, Jordan, and is a graduate of the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens.

Ghana is home to a wide diversity of people groups, rapidly entering a modern and fast paced world. People may still be seen in traditional clothing and adhering to the old traditions, but many now have access to cell phones and internet. Ghanaians are divided into 75 different ethnic groups. Although the 2010 census reported that over 70% of Ghanaians are Christian, Islam (in the north) and traditional religions are second and third in percentage of adherents.

Team Members should be exemplary role models, have the ability to teach the faith to children and teens and be flexible in cross-cultural settings. Camp counselors, Sunday school teachers and youth workers are encouraged to apply.

Dates: August 6 – 21, 2018

Cost: $ 1,460 (+ airfare)

TravelTeam Members must fly on the international travel itinerary OCMC will provide to and from the project destination. Team Members are responsible for all air travel: one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Monday, August 6 (by 4 pm for orientation) and an international segment from JAX to Accra, Ghana on Wednesday, August 8, and return home from Accra on Tuesday, August 21. Airfares are not included in participant cost.

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
