2018 Guatemala Teaching Team

Traveling From: 6/18/2018 to 6/30/2018; Team Cost: $1355*

Tajumuco – The 2018 Guatemala Teaching Team will be based in the province of Huehutenango and will introduce Church services and the various ministries necessary to meet the needs of a growing parish. This five-day event will assist the faithful who have been engaged in planting Orthodoxy among the indigenous people of Guatemala. The Team has been asked to teach and empower individuals to live fully as Orthodox Christians. The Team will celebrate the daily liturgical life with the participants, offer teaching sessions, have time for fellowship and visit other Orthodox communities within Guatemala.

Several thousand Guatemalans and Mexicans came into the Orthodox Church in 2010 under the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Mexico. Most were originally Roman Catholics who fell away for various reasons or were alienated because of their non-traditional, often charismatic worship practices. The majority are descendants of ancient Mayans who lived in Central America long before Europeans arrived. These diverse communities were united by the late Fr. Andrés Girón, a former Roman Catholic priest and an active politician. In terms of villages and churches, there are several dozen independent communities and several thousand faithful.

The Church in Guatemala is in a period of growth. Over the last two decades, many communities began a spiritual journey that has brought them to Orthodoxy. Work with OCMC missionaries to Guatemala to establish the Orthodox Church and strengthen Eucharistic communities while supporting social projects that promote self-sufficiency.

Spanish speakers are encouraged to apply, but not required. This Team will be led by Jesse Brandow, long term missionary.

Dates: June 18-30, 2018

Cost: $ 1,355 (+ airfare)

Travel Team Members must fly on the international travel itinerary OCMC will provide to and from the project destination. Team Members are responsible for all air travel: one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Monday June 18 (by 4 pm for orientation) and an international segment from JAX for Tuxtla, Mexico on Wednesday, June 20, and returning home on Saturday June 30. Aiirfares are not included in participant cost.

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
