2018 Uganda Teaching Team

Traveling From: 5/21/2018 to 6/3/2018; Team Cost: $1370*

The 2018 Mission Team to Uganda has been invited by Metropolitan Jonah of Kampala and All Uganda to share the message that "we are One, Holy Orthodox Church." The Team has been asked to assist with a clergy retreat in Kampala as well as offer teaching in four different communities in the Northern region of Gulu. The Team will visit St. Nektarios Orthodox Community in Akonyibedo village, where the Orthodox Health Center and a Nursery school are, the Archangel Michael Orthodox Church in Koro Lapainat village, where Archangel Michael Orthodox High school is located, the St. John Orthodox Church Otwal Village, Where Mama Despina Elementary school is located and the St. Athanasios Amuca village.

Orthodoxy arose in East Africa without the influence of foreign missionaries; founded by two charismatic African men searching for truth and ‘orthodoxia’ in the 1920’s. In 1946, the Orthodox Church of Uganda was received into canonical Orthodoxy with approximately 10,000 baptized members. Today there are: over 200,000 Orthodox Christian believers; 90 communities; 75 priests and deacons; 46 schools; one Orthodox hospital and 6 clinics.

Situated near the equator in East Africa, Uganda gained independence from Colonial rule in the early 1960’s. Within 10 years, Idi Amin gained power and he, and those who followed him, were responsible for the death of over half a million Ugandans. In the mid-1990’s the nation began healing from twenty years of civil war, famine, dictatorial rule and tribal killings. Even though the country had suffered greatly, the Orthodox Church of Uganda has continued to grow as it offers a witness to the triumphant love of Christ. Under the leadership of His Eminence Jonah, the Church continues to mature and meet the growing needs of her people.

Volunteer to use your skills, talents, and time to build bonds between Orthodox communities in Africa and North America. This Team is reserved for St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary students.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
