2017 Guatemala Teaching Team

Traveling From: 5/22/2017 to 6/1/2017; Team Cost: $1215*

Hueheutenango, GUATEMALA – Share the Orthodox Faith in Guatemala by being a part of a teaching team that will offer religious education, catechism and encouragement to church leaders, seminarians and young adults.

The 2017 Guatemala Teaching Mission Team will be at the Saints Peter and Paul Seminary, based at the Centro Apostolico in the province of Huehutenango. The main focus of the catechetical team will be to teach seminars that will help strengthen faith; deepen understanding of the Church; and teach about the Christian life in a manner that will empower individuals to live as Orthodox Christians.

Teaching topics will introduce ministries of the Church that meet the spiritual needs of a parish and may include chanter(s)/choir, acolytes, Catechetical school, youth ministry, young adult outreach, ladies auxiliary, outreach and evangelism ministry, Bible study, councils, planning committees and stewardship.

These efforts will assist the catechists who have been engaged in planting Orthodoxy among the indigenous people of Guatemala. Clergy, catechists, seminarians, young adults, church school teachers and other leaders from different communities of the Mayan Orthodox Church will be invited. The participants will then teach others when they return to their community. The Team will celebrate the daily liturgical life with the participants, offer instructional sessions, have time for fellowship and evening activities, and visit other Orthodox communities within Guatemala.

The Church in Guatemala is in a period of growth. Over the last two decades, a large number of communities, made up of native Mayans began a spiritual journey that has brought them to Orthodoxy. Catechists travel every two months to attend a catechist seminar to learn more about the Faith. Work with the indigenous Mayan people and OCMC missionaries to Guatemala to establish the Orthodox Church and strengthening Eucharistic communities while supporting social projects that promote self-sufficiency.

Team members will also offer hope and encouragement to the Church in Guatemala. Orthodox seminary students are invited to apply (contact OCMC for seminarian grant opportunities). Spanish speakers are encouraged to apply, but not required.

Dates: May 22 – June 1, 2017
Cost: $ 1,215.00 (+ airfare)

Travel – Members make flight arrangements: a one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Monday, May 22 (by 4 pm for orientation in St. Augustine, FL); depart from JAX for Guatemala City, Guatemala on Wednesday, May 24, and return home from Guatemala on Thursday, June 1. Team members must fly on the same itinerary to and from the project destination -- OCMC will provide a travel itinerary. Airfares are not included in cost.

Fund raising - Each Team member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares. Participants are encouraged to let others know that they will be sharing in the work of missions through their tax-deductible donations, and invite others to participate through prayer and financial support. The cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC relies solely on gifts and offerings from churches and individuals for support. If you would like to contribute to this ministry mission project – retreat costs, transportation, translators, etc - we welcome you to do so and are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
