2017 Albania Youth Work Team

Traveling From: 6/13/2017 to 6/27/2017; Team Cost: $1290*

SHEN VLASH, ALBANIA -- Help administer youth programs at the Children’s Home of Hope in Shen Vlash. Team members will teach arts, crafts, catechism, offer sports activities and English lessons for children, and assist in the daily activities and ministries of the Children’s Home of Hope.

The 2017 Albania Youth Team will offer summer camps for youth for the Children’s Home of Hope and the Protaganist School. Work under the supervision of the Albanian staff and OCMC missionary Pamela Barksdale to offer programs for the children. The camp program will also include excursions, talent show, Olympics and other fun activities for the children who will attend. Team members will also provide a visible witness of the faith to youth, visit ministries of the Church in Albania and meet other OCMC missionaries.

Under the Ministry of Social Work of Albania, the Children's Home of Hope opened in 2003 and since then has offered a loving, home model for children who have troubled home situations. It is open to children that may be orphaned, come from single parent families, or families experiencing some type of hardship. This home is a blessing and gift to the children, ages 5-18, who come from particularly difficult backgrounds. Help the Church strengthen its ministry programs and contribute to its ongoing growth.

After five centuries of Ottoman presence and five decades of communist rule, Albania suffered the most severe religious persecution in the world. All forms of religion were constitutionally prohibited; most churches and monasteries had been destroyed, no Church infrastructure existed, and only a few clergy remained. Today, under the guidance of Archbishop ANASTASIOS of Tirana and All Albania, along with the help of Orthodox missionaries and dedicated Albanian leaders the Church has been resurrected and continues to flourish. Be a witness of the Faith in a country where 70% of the people come from a Muslim tradition by being a part of this teaching and outreach Team.

The Team will be led by Pamela Barksdale. Team members who have experience in youth work, camps, teaching (English, religious education), music, arts, crafts and sports are needed.

Dates: June 13 – June 27, 2017
Cost: $1,290 (+ airfare)

Travel – Members make flight arrangements: a one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Tuesday, June 13 (by 4 pm for orientation in St. Augustine, FL); depart from JAX for Tirana, Albania on Thursday, June 15, and return home from Tirana on Tuesday, June 27. Team members must fly on the same itinerary to and from the project destination (return locations will differ) -- OCMC will provide a travel itinerary. Airfares are not included in cost.

Fund raising - Each Team member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares. Team members raise funds to cover the cost of their participation. Participants are encouraged to let others know that they will be sharing in the work of missions through their tax-deductible donations, and invite others to participate through prayer and financial support. The cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC relies solely on gifts and offerings from churches and individuals for support. If you would like to contribute to this ministry mission project – the orphanage, youth camp – we welcome you to do so and are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
