Teacher of Lay Leaders

  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Prior completion of a formal theological education that is both comprehensive and recognized by one of the Orthodox jurisdictions (for example, formal seminary graduates as well as graduates of programs such as the St. Stephen’s program).
  • Preference given to people who have hands-on teaching experience in a church context (e.g. camp directors, pastoral assistants, youth directors, etc.) or who have some other type of teaching background.
  • The missionary would lead/teach frequent retreats in important, centralized parishes across the mission field; these retreats should be part of an over-arching plan for teaching core tenants of the Orthodox faith to lay leaders, including catechists, youth groups, and other lay leaders.
  • The missionary will focus not only on teaching but also on mentoring and equipping new teachers from among the lay leaders who would then go out to new regions of Guatemala to extend the educational program to areas that the missionary cannot visit.
  • Requires travel independently across Guatemala and Mexico by using public vans, buses, and other vehicles.
  • The missionary must be flexible/adaptable to many environments and living situations, and also must be adept at forming friendships with local Orthodox families because he/she will sleep in local people’s houses and eat with them when leading retreats.
  • Musical talents would be a great advantage in adapting to local music customs which include Bible songs.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
