A lexandria, Egypt - The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa met under the Presidency of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II. Twenty-four Metropolitans and Bishops from all of Africa were invited to the Synod to discuss pastoral, administrative, missionary, and current issues which have to do with the Alexandrian Church. The Holy Synod elevated the Diocese of Zambia to a Metropolis; the Diocese of Ghana to the Metropolis of Accra; and Cyrene to an active Metropolis.
A new Diocese, of Burundi and Rwanda, was then established, together with the election of two new Bishops.
A variety of topics were addressed during the three days of discussions, among which were:
- His Eminence Jonah of Uganda, “Pastoral problems of those approaching the Orthodox faith from idolatry.”
- His Eminence Alexandros of Nigeria, “Return of the funeral service to the Divine Liturgy. Sacraments and Divine Eucharist. The liturgical act today in the Throne of Alexandria. Study on the necessity of possible liturgical modifications.”
- His Eminence Alexios of Carthage, “Prospects for our ecclesiastic or missionary activity and presence in Islamic countries. Experiences and journeys, dangers, approach, manner of visiting, proposals.”
- His Eminence Sergios of the Cape of Good Hope, representative of the Patriarchate at the 4th Presynodal Pan-Orthodox Conference in Chambessy from 4th-6th June 2009 on the topic of the Diaspora, spoke about this conference.
- His Eminence Dimitrios of Irinopoli, “Experiences and prospects of pastoral and missionary activity from visits to new areas in Africa (eg. Seychelles)."
- “The spiritual preparation of candidates for the Priesthood and the spiritual life of the clergy."
Following the presentations of each proposal, dialogue ensued and views were expressed, as was each personal experience of the Hierarchs from their pastoral service on the African continent. The deliberations of the Holy Synod continued with the briefing on inter-Orthodox, inter-Church, and inter-Christian dialogues, conferences, and councils. |
