iscover Alaska's unique Orthodox heritage by participating in an OCMC building team to Tyonek. Located on Upper Cook Inlet, the Orthodox community was established in 1891 in this Athabascan Indian village. Team members will work on the renovation of St. Nicholas Church, which was built in 1933. Team members should be prepared to assist with construction and share the Orthodox Faith.Today, the Church in Alaska is in a period of renewal, working to maintain an Orthodox witness. The Orthodox Christian Mission Center continues to play a role in this renewal by sending Mission Teams to Alaska to offer encouragement, education and support to the communities in this vast diocese.
Team members will continue work on the renovations and repairs to the Saint Nicholas Church. As you assist the local community with construction of the first and second floors, replace the bell tower and roofing to the St. Nicholas Church, you will also have an opportunity to participate in basic catechism while encouraging the community members. Team members will meet in Anchorage, Alaska for orientation and will be housed in local community lodge.
Participant cost includes transportation from Anchorage to Tyonek, Alaska, which will be arranged by OCMC. Team members make round-trip flight arrangements from their home city to Anchorage, Alaska, and are encouraged to raise the additional funds to cover the cost of domestic travel.
It has been over two hundred years since the Orthodox Christian Faith was proclaimed on the shores of Alaska, and for this reason, it is often considered America’s Holy Land. The Orthodox Faith has become central to many of the Alaskan cultures, and Orthodoxy plays a significant role in many parts of the State. The Orthodox Church in Alaska today faces many challenges.
Volunteers with a willingness to work hard and a firm grasp of the Orthodox Faith are encouraged to apply! Space is limited to skilled or experienced construction workers. Project dates will vary with participants’ availability.
