In the 20th century, Albania fell under a communist regime and suffered the most severe religious persecution in the world; all forms of religion were constitutionally prohibited and by 1991, more than 1600 churches and monasteries had been destroyed, no Church infrastructure existed, and only 22 elderly clergy remained. Today, under the guidance of His Beatitude ANASTASIOS, Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and All Albania, along with the help of Orthodox missionaries, the Church has been resurrected and continues to flourish. Yet, 70% of the country is Muslim.
Under the Ministry of Social Work in Albania, the Children's Home of Hope officially opened in July 2003 after being blessed by His Beatitude ANASTASIOS, Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and All Albania. At present they care for over 40 children in a foster care environment providing a home model for the children. The Home of Hope is open to the families of the children with hope that eventually they may be re-unified.
Experience the renewal of Orthodoxy that has been taking place since 1992 and assist the Church in Albania by offering a youth camp for the Children's Home of Hope. The Team will work with the staff of the Home of Hope and offer a full summer camp program with English lessons for the youth that include lessons on the Faith. Team members will assist in the daily activities and ministries, and will be assigned to small groups. Activities include arts and crafts, play time, getting to know the children, services at the seminary chapel and sports activities. Members will have an opportunity to meet the OCMC missionaries and visit some of the ministries of the Church.
