The Experience of Serving Abroad

W
hile the specific details of your assignment will be personally customized, the purpose of all missionary endeavors is to:
  1. Help develop vibrant Eucharistic communities.
  2. Train indigenous church leaders.
  3. Assist the Church in witnessing locally through philanthropic ministry.
In other words, you will participate in Making Disciples of all Nations.

We strive to operate effectively and feel like a family. OCMC is committed to professionally combining practical support with pastoral care to meet the actual needs of our missionaries and to help you be effective.

To be effective, you will need to cultivate an attitude of humility and a teachable spirit. Therefore plan to spend most of your first term focused on:
  1. Learning the local language.
  2. Adapting to the host culture.
  3. Loving the people of that culture.
To be effective, you will also need to maintain regular contact with your support team. Communicationg with them frequently and allowing them to share in your life and ministry will encourage them to support you throughout your term.

To be effective, your assignment will work in harmony with a strategic field plan. Through annual field planning and continuing education retreats, OCMC is working to maintain active field plans in each country where we serve and your assignment will be to contribute to the fulfillment of that plan.

If you are in a country with other OCMC missionaries, you will also work under the guidance of an OCMC field leader. Together with your hierarch and OCMC Missionary Department administrators, you will be well cared for and directed as part of a productive team.

Please join us in praying daily for qualified clergy and others with administrate gifts and pastoral hearts to serve in these positions.

OCMC is committed to recruiting, training, sending, and serving long-term missionaries. Therefore, we provide outstanding benefits to care for the long-range needs of our missionaries. We offer competitive health insurance, medical savings funds, loan payment assistance, resettlement funds, a pension plan, and more. Should our missionaries decide to return to North America, we can provide practical and pastoral support for a period after their return as they re-acclimate and re-establish themselves.

The effort of Orthodox missions has come a long ways since OCMC sent its first missionary in 1985. The next 20 plus years promise no less. The opportunity of participating in introducing people to Christ and the fullness of the Orthodox Faith?particularly those who have never had a chance to hear the Gospel burns in our hearts. Every Orthodox Christian is called to participate. Are you called to be an OCMC missionary? Contact us and we will find out together.
