2018 Albania Youth Work Team

Traveling From: 6/12/2018 to 6/30/2018; Team Cost: $1190*

Shen Vlash – The 2018 Albania Youth Team will offer a summer camp for youth who reside at the Children’s Home of Hope, just outside of Tirana. Work under the supervision of Pamela Barksdale (past OCMC missionary to Albania), Prifterisha Irina Nushi and Albanian staff to offer a program which will include excursions, talent show, Olympics and other fun activities for the children. Team members will also provide a visible witness of the faith to youth, visit ministries of the Church in Albania and meet other OCMC missionaries.

Under the Ministry of Social Work of Albania, the Children's Home of Hope opened in 2003 and since then has offered a loving, home model for children who have troubled home situations. It is open to children that may be orphaned, come from single parent families, or families experiencing some type of hardship. This home is a blessing and gift to the children, ages 4-14, who come from particularly difficult backgrounds. Help the Church strengthen its ministry programs and contribute to its ongoing growth.

After five centuries of Ottoman presence and five decades of communist rule, Albania suffered the most severe religious persecution in the world. All forms of religion were constitutionally prohibited; most churches and monasteries had been destroyed, no Church infrastructure existed, and only a few clergy remained. Today, under the guidance of Archbishop ANASTASIOS of Tirana and All Albania, along with the help of Orthodox missionaries and dedicated Albanian leaders the Church has been resurrected and continues to flourish. Be a witness of the Faith in a country where 70% of the people come from a Muslim tradition by being a part of this teaching and outreach Team.

The Team will be led by Pamela Barksdale. Team members who have experience in youth work, camps, teaching (English, religious education), music, arts, crafts and sports are needed.

Dates: June 12 – June 30, 2018

Cost: $1,190 (+ airfare)

Travel Team Members must fly on the international travel itinerary OCMC will provide to and from the project destination. Team Members are responsible for all air travel: one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Tuesday June 12 (by 4 pm for orientation) and an international segment from JAX to Tirana, Albania on Thursday June 14, returning home on Saturday June 30. Airfares are not included in participant cost.

Fund raising – Each Team Member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares associated with this Team. Team Members are encouraged to invite others to participate in this effort through prayer and tax-deductible donations. Participant cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC partially subsidizes each Team Member’s cost to keep it at the price posted and relies on donations from individuals and churches for these costs. If you are interested in assisting with these expenses, please contact the OCMC for more information. If you would like to contribute to this project, which is also supported by the OCMC, we are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
