2017 Ghana Youth Work Team

Traveling From: 8/21/2017 to 9/2/2017; Team Cost: $1245*

Larteh, GHANA -- The 2017 Ghana Mission Team has been invited by Metropolitan Narcissos of Accra to share the love of Christ at a summer youth camp program just north of the capital Accra.

Partner with the Cathedral youth leaders and clergy to assist in conducting this program at the St. Peter College in Larteh. Share your Faith with youth from grades four to senior high school (ages 9-17), and help train future leaders and counselors. The Team will offer lessons on the Faith, bible stories, crafts and sport activities. Activities will also include discussions with the teenagers on social and faith issues.

The Orthodox Church is one of the few faiths not associated with colonialism in Ghana and this Team. In 1982, the Church in Ghana was canonically received by the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. The Cathedral was constructed in 1989 with the aid of an Orthodox Mission Team. The Holy Archdiocese of Ghana was established in 1997 and His Eminence Narcissos was elected Metropolitan of Accra in 2016. Its jurisdiction includes the countries of Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Mali.

Ghana is home to a wide diversity of people groups, rapidly entering a modern and fast paced world. On the one side, people may still be seen in traditional clothing and adhering to the old traditions, but many now have access to cell phones and internet. Ghanaians are divided into 75 different ethnic groups. Although the 2010 census reported that over 70% of Ghanaians are Christian, Islam (in the north) and traditional religions are second and third in percentage of adherents.

Share the teachings of the Orthodox faith through teaching and be a part of the laying the foundation of the Faith for the youth of Ghana. Mission Team members should be exemplary role models for the youth. Participants should have the ability to: work with children and teens; work as part of a team; be flexible in a rural and cross-cultural setting; and be well-grounded in the basic teachings of the Church. Camp counselors, Sunday school teachers and youth workers are encouraged to apply.

Dates: August 21 – September 2, 2017
Cost: $ 1,245 (+ airfare)

Travel – Members make flight arrangements: a one-way domestic flight to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) Monday, August 21 (by 4 pm for orientation in St. Augustine, FL); depart from JAX for Accra, Ghana on Wednesday, August 23, and return home from Accra on Saturday, September 2. Team members must fly on the same itinerary to and from the project destination (return locations will differ) -- OCMC will provide a travel itinerary. Airfares are not included in cost.

Fund raising – Each Team member is responsible for the participant cost and airfares. Team members raise funds to cover the cost of their participation. Participants are encouraged to let others know that they will be sharing in the work of missions through their tax-deductible donations, and invite others to participate through prayer and financial support. The cost includes room and board, local transportation, orientation costs, ministry expenses, excursion and materials.

OCMC relies solely on gifts and offerings from churches and individuals for support. If you would like to contribute to this ministry mission project – the youth camp program – we welcome you to do so and are grateful for your support. This is optional and for that reason it is not included in the participant cost.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
