The 2013 Tanzania Mission Team will offer a catechetical seminar that the Metropolis of Mwanza sponsors every year. Team members will participate in teaching and basic catechism. In addition, the Team will celebrate the daily liturgical life of the Tanzanian Church; have time for fellowship and evening activities. The seminars are attended by clergy, catechists, church leaders, young adults and church school teachers from throughout the Metropolis. The Team will also visit surrounding communities.
Tanzania is a country with over 45 million people, where Islam and animism constitute the religion of half the population. Orthodoxy came to Tanzania in the 1960's, and in 1983 the first Orthodox Tanzanian priest was ordained. As Orthodoxy continues to spread throughout East Africa, the Metropolis of Mwanza in Tanzania shines as one of the fastest growing and most developed. Under the pastoral leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan JERONYMOS, this mission diocese consists of more than 40,000 faithful and over 160 parishes, with 48 priests.
Since 2004, Teams have offered an annual catechism seminar that has been attended by catechists and other church leaders from throughout the metropolis. They offer a deeper understanding of our faith, in order that the catechists can bring what they learn back to their home communities.
This team will be jointly sponsored by OCMC and the Orthodox Church of Finland. It is a witness of the solidarity of the Orthodox Church which spans both culture and race. Participants should be well-grounded in the basic teachings of the Church and have the ability to share and teach the Orthodox Faith.
Experience the zeal and excitement of the Church which is growing with great intensity and fervor in Tanzania.
