Teaching – Lodwar
Teach the Orthodox Faith in Lodwar where a catechetical training seminar will be offered in an area where the foundation of Orthodoxy is being built. New catechists, from outlaying areas, will be taught a basic catechism so they can return to their villages and share the Faith. The Team will conduct catechism, offer presentations and lead Bible studies for the faithful and local church leaders.
The 2013 OCMC Kenya Orthodox Mission Team will help the clergy and lay leaders of the region with catechism of both new converts and those entrusted to offer catechism in their community when their parish priest travels to other parishes. Team members will visit the Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary in Nairobi before traveling to Lodwar in northern Kenya. Through use of the Bible, catechetical lessons, and some arts and craft projects, Team members will be presenting the basic tenets of Christianity.
Orthodox Mission Teams have been invited by Archbishop MAKARIOS of Kenya to help the growth of Orthodoxy in this region. Over eight hundred individuals have been received into Orthodoxy in the largely non-Christian region. Previous OCMC Teams assisted with the construction of churches, evangelism and teaching.
About 9% of Kenya’s population belongs to peoples only marginally impacted by the Gospel. Lodwar, the largest town in northwestern Kenya with a population of 17,000, is the capital of the Turkana District. The Turkana, who live in this remote region, are a Nilotic people numbering less than half a million people, are noted for raising camels and weaving baskets, and considered a less evangelized people group. In their oral traditions, they designate themselves the people of the grey bull.
Share your Faith by providing outreach on this Team. Team Members must be in good physical condition and be prepared for harsh living conditions. Participants with a sound understanding of the Orthodox Faith and the ability to teach have been requested.
Continue to build a relationship with the Turkana.
