Mrs. Athena A Economou
Athena A. Economou is a graduate of Connecticut College with a BA in European History. She was a licensed Interior Designer with the State of CT for over thirty years in West Hartford. In 1999, Athena closed the design studio to move with her husband to Mendham, NJ. In addition to her work on residential homes, Athena also had commercial projects consisting of many law firms, accounting firms, and real estate offices, as well as model homes and apartments. Athena continued to work in the tri-state area from her New Jersey home and then from her New York City apartment. She has been an Allied Member of ASID from 2003 to the present.
When Richard and Athena began their married life, Athena joined the Ladies Philoptochos Society at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hartfrod, CT. She first served on the Executive Board and later, as President of Philoptochos. With a move to New Jersey, served as President of the Ladies Philoptochos Society at Holy Trinity in Westfield, NJ. Richard’s work necessitated yet another move to New York City, where they lived three blocks from the Archdiocesan Cathedral. Athena was elected to the Cathedral Philoptochos Board and Richard was appointed by His Eminence to the Cathedral’s Executive Board of Trustees. The focus of the Cathedral Philoptochos was to assist National Philoptochos Social Services with needed funds. It was a unique experience to be at the heart of Archdiocesan and Philoptochos politics. Athena worked on many events from the suburban parish level to a big city Cathedral, as well as, on DAD Metropolis and National Philoptochos events. Athena served on the National Philoptochos Board from 2014-2016.
Athena is now a Florida resident and member of Saint Mark in Boca Raton, where she serves as 2nd Vice President of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Athena is a member of Leadership 100 and Impact 100 of South Palm Beach County. Athena and Richard have as their greatest achievement their children and grandchildren! Their son, Peter, lives in North Brunswick, NJ, with his wife, Lillian and two children, Sebastian Alexandros and Ava Alexandra. Their daughter, Alexa, is married to Sean Rice and resides in Palm Beach Gardens and have a son, J. Holden Richards.
